Authorities within the Kitui law courts have voiced profound concern regarding a deeply troubling pattern of child defilement cases that continue to plague the community. Speaking during the launch of Children’s Service Month on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Kitui Chief Magistrate David Mburu revealed startling statistics about the persistent crisis. The county is confronting a devastating reality, with court records indicating an average of one hundred defilement incidents being formally reported each year over the past four years.
Magistrate Mburu provided a sobering update on the current year’s situation, noting that as of last week in November 2025, approximately eighty defilement cases had already been entered into the court’s docket. This data strongly suggests the problem is not diminishing but remains a pervasive issue within the community. The magistrate described these persistent numbers as representing a severe violation of the fundamental rights of innocent children that demands immediate attention.
In response to this ongoing crisis, the magistrate issued a compelling call for concerted action during Wednesday’s event, emphasizing that the responsibility for protection extends beyond the courtroom. He pointedly observed that the perpetrators of these crimes are often not strangers but individuals from within the community itself. Consequently, he stressed the critical need for continuous public sensitization programs to address the root causes of this offence that have persisted through recent years.
Furthermore, he highlighted a significant challenge in the judicial process that has hampered cases throughout 2025 and previous years: the crucial need for witnesses and victims to attend court proceedings. Without their testimony, the pursuit of justice is severely hampered, and cases risk being undermined despite the court’s efforts to process them efficiently.
Echoing this commitment to justice, Lady Justice Lucy Gitari announced at the same November 12th event that during the ongoing Children’s Service Month throughout November 2025, the court would prioritize the expedited hearing of cases involving minors. This initiative aims to clear pending matters and deliver swifter justice for vulnerable young victims whose cases have accumulated over the year.
The collective message from the judiciary during last week’s launch is clear: while the courts are dedicated to their role, a true resolution requires a community-wide pledge to safeguard children, uphold their rights, and actively participate in the legal process to ensure that offenders are held accountable under the full weight of the law. Magistrate Mburu expressed his hope that through these concerted efforts, the community might eventually see a future where no defilement cases are brought before the courts.
