Catholic Priest’s Murder and ongoing Investigations

Father John Maina Ndegwa, a priest from Igwamiti Catholic Parish in Nyandarua, was found dead on May 15, 2025, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway in Kikopey. His body showed gunshot wounds and head injuries, suggesting he was killed elsewhere and dumped. The DCI in Nakuru has launched a thorough investigation.

Detectives are tracing Father Maina’s last movements. He left his parish on May 14 for a meeting in Nyahururu, leaving his car at Mary Immaculate Church. He never returned, per his housekeeper. Police are reviewing phone records and interviewing a priest, housekeeper, and friend.

A post-mortem on May 19 confirmed multiple gunshot wounds, with one fatal to his skull. Bruises were not the cause of death, and toxicology results are pending. The Church’s limited disclosure of the autopsy has frustrated relatives seeking answers.

Investigators are probing motives, including possible links to money from a recent parish event attended by Rigathi Gachagua. Father Maina’s missing Subaru Forester and prior unreported threats are also under review. No arrests have been made as of May 21, 2025. The murder has rocked Nyahururu Diocese, with Senator John Methu urging swift action. As the DCI’s homicide team pursues leads, the community demands justice for Father Maina’s brutal killing.
