Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) founder Prof Makau Mutua has stated that National Airline carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) should be held responsible for the death of Captain Daudi Kibati.
“The state and Kenya Airways SACRIFICED Captain Daudi Kibati — my classmate at Kitui High School — for NOTHING. They must bear LEGAL LIABILITY for not STOPPING flights from NEW YORK and ROME MONTHS ago”, he wrote on his Twitter account.
His sentiments were supported by fellow lawyer, senior counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi who stated, replying to the above tweet, ” Picking passengers from Rome and New York was DEATH SENTENCE. PERIOD!!!”.
Captain Daudi Kibati was a senior pilot with KQ’s Boeing 787 division who flew the last plane before Kenyan closed it borders to flights on 23rd March 2020.
The last flight was used to evacuate Kenyans that wanted to come back to the country.
The pilot fell sick towards the end of last month and succumbed on 1st April 2020 due to coronavirus. He was buried yesterday in his home village in Kitui.
Kenyans had called on the government since February 10th 2020 to close the air space from foreign flights but it took the expose by a Kenya Airways junior security officer Ali Gire to expose that flights from China Southern were still coming to Nairobi.
The whereabouts of the over 230 passengers in a China Southern Airline remains unknown to this day as the country grapples to convince Kenyans to stay indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Covid-19 virus has been confirmed on 126 Kenyans, 8 cases have been closed, meaning 4 have recovered while 4 other have died.
It remains to be seen if KHRC will sue KQ, which has already applied for a govt bailout, for negligence.
