The driver assigned to Kibra Member of Parliament, Peter Orero, was on Monday convicted and fined Ksh. 100,000 for obstructing traffic along a busy Nairobi highway.
The court heard that the incident, which occurred last week, was captured on video by members of the public. The footage showed the MP’s official vehicle, with Hon. Orero in the passenger seat, improperly parked and blocking the flow of traffic, causing a significant snarl-up.
The driver, whose name was not immediately disclosed, pleaded guilty to the charge of obstruction. In his ruling, the presiding magistrate emphasized that all road users, regardless of their status or affiliation, must obey traffic laws to ensure order and safety for everyone.
The swift conviction and fine have been noted by members of the public and traffic advocacy groups, who have often complained about impunity on the roads, especially from vehicles belonging to government officials.
