Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba was ousted from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 19, 2025, for alleged disloyalty. The party’s Disciplinary Committee cited her support for Fred Matiang’i, a rival to President Ruto, including her presence at his Gusii Stadium event and critical comments on Spice FM. UDA swiftly named Consolata Wakwabubi as her Senate replacement.
Orwoba’s troubles grew after backing Matiang’i’s 2027 presidential bid. Her airport welcome for him and criticism of Ruto’s labor program were seen as betrayals. UDA members filed complaints, leading to a disciplinary summon on May 7, 2025, which she argued was unfair.
Orwoba sought a High Court injunction to stop the proceedings, claiming they were a political attack. Her team argued the process violated her rights and was predecided. Despite a temporary court order on May 16, 2025, UDA proceeded with her expulsion.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi dismissed Orwoba’s petition on May 20, 2025, calling it “incompetent” for adding parties without approval. The ruling upheld UDA’s decision, leaving Orwoba without party affiliation and facing Senate removal. Known for advocating against gender-based violence, Orwoba vows to continue her fight, eyeing a 2027 Bobasi run
