Law Society of Kenya’s Legal Awareness Week 2024: Strengthening Civic Empowerment through Legal Aid and Engagement

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is hosting the annual Legal Awareness Week which is set to start on Monday, 28th October, to Friday, 1st November 2024. This year, the week is being observed under the theme, “Laws For The People By The People: Strengthening Civic Empowerment.” The event, organized by the Public Interest Litigation Committee and convened by Mr. Manwa Hosea with co-convener Mr. Steven Mbugua, aims to provide free legal aid and promote civic education across Nairobi and other locations nationwide.

Schedule and Key Activities

The Legal Awareness Week features a series of legal aid clinics, media campaigns, forums, and special events. Here’s an overview of the main activities that are scheduled:

Monday, 28th October 2024

  • Launch of Legal Awareness Week at the Milimani Law Courts Parking Yard, from 9:00 am.
  • In-House Counsel Forum at Milimani Ceremonial Hall from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
  • Legal Aid Clinics in Milimani, Kibera, and Makadara Law Courts Parking Yards, and other locations countrywide.
  • Media Campaigns: Focused on civic empowerment through hashtags and social media discussions.

Tuesday, 29th October 2024

  • Legal Aid Clinics continues across various locations.
  • Media Campaigns for civic empowerment.
  • Prison Visit: Advocates plan to visit the Industrial Area Remand and Allocation Prison, with a 10:30 am pick-up from Milimani Law Courts. (Limited to the first 20 advocates who register.)

Wednesday, 30th October 2024

  • Legal Aid Clinics across Nairobi and other branches.
  • Continued Media Campaigns to foster public engagement on civic issues.
  • Prison Visit: Advocates visited Langata Women’s Prison, with a 10:30 am pick-up from Milimani Law Courts. (Limited to the first 20 advocates who register.)

Thursday, 31st October 2024

  • Legal Aid Clinics and Media Campaigns across Nairobi and other locations.

Friday, 1st November 2024

  • Legal Aid Clinics and Media Campaigns continue.
  • Joint Forum for the Public Interest Litigation Committee and stakeholders at the Swiss Mount Lenana Hotel.
  • Gala Dinner to honor advocates who participated in the anti-finance bill protests, held at Swiss Mount Lenana at 6:00 pm. (Dinner charges: Ksh 2,000; Paybill: 323929, Account Number: 0102095866706)

CPD Accreditation for Advocates

Advocates participating in Legal Awareness Week will earn 1 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Unit, offering a valuable opportunity to contribute to public service while furthering their professional development.

The event also fosters public engagement and reinforces the LSK’s commitment to civic empowerment. Advocates interested in participating in the Legal Awareness Week activities, including prison visits, can register via the LSK’s website.
